How to correctly recycle the Portrait Dialogue COM+ service or restart Portrait Dialogue services.

When resolving issues with Portrait Dialogue (PD), you are often asked by Pitney Bowes Software Support to "recycle you Dialogue COM+ service".
For anyone unclear as to what this means or how to achieve it, these are the complete steps that you should follow.
  • Ensure that users are logged off the system.
  • On the target PD server, open the Windows Services console and locate the three Portrait Dialogue services. They are prefixed with 'MH ...'.
  • Stop the MH Receive Mail Service and MH Send Message Service services. Do not stop the MH Dialog Manager Service.
  • Run Component Services from the Start menu.
  • In the tree on the left, open My Computer | Running Processes and locate the MH Dialog Server process.
  • Right-click it and choose Recycle. This will stop and start the process in a way similar to application pool recycling - i.e. it prevents new connections, and waits until all existing transactions have completed, and then restarts the process (creating a new Process ID), allowing new connections to run again.
  • Restart the MH Receive Mail Service and MH Send Message Service services that you previously stopped.
Sometimes you need to completely stop the process (e.g. when applying a Portrait Dialogue patch or a hotfix). This effectively forces the service to stop and then allows you to shut it down without it restarting automatically.

  • Right-click it and choose Disable.
  • When the service's icon changes to show a red circle with a white bar through it, right-click it again and choose Shutdown. Note that the service does not restart automatically in the Running Processes section.
  • At this point, you should be able to work on or replace any Portrait Dialogue files.
  • When ready, right-click the MH Dialog Server process and choose Enable. You should see the process automatically restart in the Running Applications section.
  • Restart the MH Receive Mail Service and MH Send Message Service services that you previously stopped.
Occasionally, you may be asked by Pitney Bowes Software Support simply to "restart your Dialogue services".
