Resolve poor print quality or no print on the mailstation or mailstation2

Issue

Print quality issues, such as faded, fuzzy, partial print, failed to print, smudged/smeared ink, have occurred. Or, the meter displays error code 2B82.

Cause

Several factors can contribute to deterioration in print quality:
  • Lack of use: When your meter is idle for a long span, dried ink from previous printings can clog the nozzles in the print head
  • Overuse: Accelerates wear and tear on the mechanical parts of your printer assembly, which can affect alignment and other printer functions
  • Low ink, an empty ink cartridge, or the wrong type of ink

Follow these steps to fix poor print quality:
  1. Lift and replace your cover
  2. When meter displays the message, Do you want to install new ink? press Enter/Yes
  3. Re-open your cover to have the ink assembly move to the front of your machine
  4. Press the unlock button on the green ink cartridge cover to release the ink cartridge
  5. Remove the cartridge and set it aside
  6. Squeeze the latches holding the print head in place and lift the print head out of your machine
  7. Clean the print head with a soft, lint-free cloth
  8. Place the print head back into your machine, making sure it clicks in place
  9. Replace the ink cartridge, making sure the circle on the bottom of the cartridge faces you
  10. Close the ink cartridge cover, making sure it clicks into place
  11. When your machine displays the message, IMPORTANT: Is ink installed?, press Enter/Yes
  12. When meter displays the message, is test pattern OK?, select the appropriate option:
  • If the test pattern is good, without broken lines or smeared ink, press Enter/Yes
  • If the test pattern is not good, run the purge maintenance function:
    • Press Menu
    • Press Review(down) until the message, Use Ink Function? displays
    • Press Enter/Yes
    • Press the down arrow key to Clean Printer Nozzles? option and then press Enter. The maintenance function will run. You can execute this function up to three (3) times to improve poor print quality.
If your machine is printing faded or poor print quality, or it is not printing:
  • Low ink or no ink in the print cartridge can impair print quality and cause other problems with your meter.
  • If your meter displays the message, Low Ink, order a replacement ink cartridge.
  • If your meter displays the message, Ink Out, the ink supply is gone and the meter will not print. You must order a replacement ink cartridge

If print quality is poor after replacing the ink cartridge:
  • Make sure the protective tape covering the vent and ink holes has been removed from the ink cartridge
  • You may have accidentally installed a spent cartridge. You can determine if your cartridge is new or used by weighing it:
    • A mailstation cartridge weighs 1.7 oz. when full
    • A full ink cartridge on the mailstation2 weighs 1.9 oz.
If your print quality does not improve after troubleshooting, replace your print head.
