How to process differences between the classic layout and layout designer for MapInfo Professional 12.5

Issue

Starting with MapInfo Professional 12.5 32bit, the behavior of the classic layout and the new layout designer are significantly different.

Cause

MapInfo Professional provides a new Layout Designer window that will eventually replace the classic Layout window. Classic Layout windows can still be created using 12.5 32bit version for printing and distributing maps.  Along with the classic layout window, there are new enhanced features that are available in the New Layout Designer window.

The Layout Designer window shows the map using the printer resolution.  This displays what the printout will look like and show how labels will be displayed on a printed map.

In contrast, the Map window shows maps using the screen resolution, which is not an accurate representation of what the printed map would look like.  Labels in a Map window may not be appear on the printed map using the classic layout window. The Layout Designer Window offers more advanced alignment tools for designing the layout and allows the insertion of image files, such as a company logo, directly to the canvas.

Once created, a "perfect" map, the layout can be customized to showcase the work in high-quality presentations or printouts.

MapInfo Professional offers both a classic Layout window for designing map layouts for print or export, and a Layout Designer window that will eventually replace the classic Layout window.

The Layout Designer window contains a live map that you can edit, so that you do not need to toggle between the layout and editing in the Map window. The Layout Designer window shows the map using the printer resolution, so that you know beforehand what your printout will look like (you will know what labels will be on the printed map). In contrast, the Map window shows maps using the screen resolution, which is not an accurate representation of what the printed map would look like (labels in a Map window may not be on the printed map). It also offers more advanced alignment tools for designing your layout and lets you insert image files, such as a company logo, directly to the canvas.

The classic Layout window lets you add complicated geometry to your layouts and lets you work with theRedistrict window, which the Layout Designer window does not. It also offers layout templates, which are not yet available with the Layout Designer window.

To read more about the Layout window, see Working with the Classic Layout Window in the HELP system within MapInfo Professional, as well as the User's Guide.
Note: The classic Layout window is currently still available, but there will be no new work or updates made to it in future releases. Instead, future releases of MapInfo Professional will focus on improving and adding to the Layout Designer window.

Familiarization with the new layout designer is recommended since that will be the layout model moving forward, eventually completely replacing the classic layout.
