Resolve Error when session state is set to State Server in Exponare


Sometimes, an Exponare installation can have the issue of ASP.NET session timeout message occurring frequently to Enquiry users. One way to reduce this timeout error is to configure the Exponare website to the session state setting of "State Server" via IIS Manager. However, doing so completely stops the Exponare functioning and Enquiry always fails to launch.


1) The likely cause is that the "ASP.NET State service" service is not running. This can happen if the "Startup type" is set to manual.

2) Sometimes the entry for "ASP.NET State service" itself can be missing from the Services list. This is due to only 32-bit .Net registered on 64-bit OS.



UPDATED: April 20, 2017

  1. Open the Services via Windows Administrative tools. 
  2. Find the entry for ASP.NET State service
  3. If ASP.NET State service is present in the list - Right click and Start the service. Also edit the properties to have the startup type "Automatic". This ensure the service always starts after a server reboot.
  4. If ASP.NET State service is not present in the list  - Activate the 64-bit ASP.NET by running the command aspnet_regiis -i under Framework64. To do this, open the Windows command prompt. Browse to location "C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v4.0.30319" and run the command C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regiis -i
