How Unique ZIP Codes are handled/processed in CODE-1 Plus

A Unique ZIP Code is a ZIP Code belonging to a specific Firm or University.  For instance, ZIP Code 20523 is a Unique ZIP Code belonging to the Department State International Division in Washington DC.  If an invalid address is presented to CODE-1 Plus with a ZIP Code of 20523, CODE-1 Plus will return the input ASIS and a default +4 of 0001.  The alternate address scheme return code will be a U in this example. The U indicates that your input address does not exist in the Unique ZIP Code you have on input.  The only valid streets for this ZIP are:

                          Streets in ZIP Code 20523
   Dir StreetName                   Sfx   Dir
      C                                     ST    NW
      21ST                                ST    NW
      22ND                               ST    NW

CODE-1 -Plus must follow the USPS CASS rules when we encounter a Unique ZIP:

  • When an input address includes a non-unique ZIP Code, CODE-1 Plus matches to the record in the Unique ZIP Code when an exact match is present and an exact match for the input address is not found outside of the Unique ZIP Code.

  • If a Unique ZIP Code is input, CODE-1 Plus matches outside of the Unique ZIP Code if the address is not found within the Unqiue ZIP Code and an exact address match exists outside of the Unique ZIP Code.

  • When an exact match exists in the Unique ZIP Code, CODE-1 Plus matches to that ZIP+4 record, even if a Unique ZIP Code was not input.

In our example, say the input street name was Pennsylvania Ave.  Since Pennsylvania doesn't exist in ZIP 20523 and we were unable to find an exact match in another ZIP Code, we have to return the input address ASIS (however, if you are getting parsed data returned, this input will not be parsed), a +4 of 0001 and a U in the alternate address scheme return code (see AM OUT if using C1BM00) which tells you that the street address is not included in the Unique ZIP and we were unable to find the street in another ZIP Code in the locality.
