This can be achieved using external keyed images.

Using this mechanism means that you do not have to import huge numbers of images into Designer, the image is referenced by a key, which then picks up the image from the location specified in the keymap xml file at run time.

This is covered in the Programmer's Guide (V5) and the Production Guide (V6) but involves a few steps.

1. Create an external key map in the Key Maps section of the Design tab, where the type need to be "external image"
2. Add a key for each image, with a sample image reference as a placeholder, this can be any image in your repository
3. Run doc1make to create your keymap file
4. Use this keymap file with doc1gen

The output from the doc1gen process should then contain your external images.
