Resolve error "Can't find file MapInfow.exe" when updating MapInfo Pro

Occasionally an error is generated while installing a MapInfo Pro maintenance patch/update.
This causes the update to fail and roll back.

The error message can vary but may be similar to the following: Can't find file MapInfow.exe.

There are many potential causes of this type of error. They are generally related to user rights, permissions, or network policies.

Perform following steps to correct this error.
  • Make sure that MapInfo Pro is closed.
  • Open a command prompt or dos window with administrative privileges by going to: start>programs>accessories>command
  • Example: Navigate to C:\Windows\SysWOW64, right click the cmd.exe file and select “Run as Administrator"
  • Type the command: <path to install directory>\mapinfow.exe –regserver
  • Examples of the commands used to navigate in the DOS window:
C:\>cd Program files (x86)
C:\Program Files (x86)> cd mapinfo
C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo>cd professional
C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional>mapinfow.exe -regserver
C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional>
  • For a default install of MapInfo Pro type: C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional\mapinfow.exe –regserver
  • After that rerun the patch.
