How to create grid lines using X and Y coordinates, MapCad and MapInfo Pro

Products affected: MapInfo Pro™, MapCad™

This is possible using the Create Polylines from DB function in MapCAD.,
Note: The table needs to be in the correct format first.

Create the table with this structure (using Excel):

Polygon_IDNode_noYX
11SouthWest Y CoordSouthWest X Coord
12SouthEast Y CoordSouthEast X Coord
13NorthEast Y CoordNorthEast X Coord
14NorthWest Y CoordNorthWest X Coord
15SouthWest Y CoordSouthWest X Coord
The reason for the 5th node is that the lines need to join back up to the start position.

Once the data is created, follow these steps:

  1. Create points using the X and Y (Table > Create Points)
  2. Load MapCAD
  3. Run the Create Polylines from DB procedure via the MapCAD toolbar – the online help shows how to fill in the dialog.
  4. This will create the polylines – one for each grid cell. You can then use the convert to region function under the objects menu to convert the lines to regions
