VERIFIED SOLUTION i

MapInfo Professional and the use of the Alias expression drop-down in the HotLink Options dialog

The field chosen for the alias expression is what the user will see in the mapper when using the hotlink tool and there are multiple hotlinkable fields setup.
If no alias is setup, the user will see the entire URL or path and file name of an image, etc. from the "filename expression" drop-down....

But you can use alias expressions so that the user would see
"Florida"  as an option to click instead of
seeing the entire URL http://www.state.fl.us/

Here "URL" has no alias expression and "URL2" does have an alias expression:

User-added image
The alias allows you to present a "friendly" name instead of a cumbersome URL or path entry....

Filename Expression - this is the drop-down where you select the actual field
holding the hotlinkable info like a URL or PATH to a jpg, etc.
i.e.   field called URL. and text in that field:  http://www.state.fl.us/

Alias expression - this is where you can point to a different field, the contents of which will be displayed when user clicks on map with hotlink tool
i.e. field called state_name and text string in that field "Florida".
Here "URL" has no alias expression and "URL2" does have an alias expression:
User-added image

So user's sees "Florida" and not  http://www.state.fl.us/
