64 bit: Program and User Settings for MapInfo Pro
User-added imageSome tasks require a good understanding of the program and user settings, and where these are located. One such task is changing the language version of MapInfo Pro. This article is helpful for those of you who may use the English version when it is released and then switch to a different language version when that becomes available.

This article is part of a larger document. If changing a language version is not for you, skip to the bottom to download a resource on a number of other settings.

Changing language version

When reinstalling a 64 bit version some of your previous user settings will be retained and those settings can contain some English text. The result is your new install might have a few residual English language strings in it. This article shows how to get rid of those residual settings.

One of the most common questions I have had from users and partners over the years is where MapInfo Pro stores all its program and user settings. This is useful knowledge for IT staff as well as super users, (which of course includes all the readers of the MapInfo Pro journal). This document includes information on many program settings as well as a few sections on trouble shooting and common tasks.

This article describes user settings that are affected when you change the language version. I always install the international English version when this is released, and then I change to the Swedish localized version which is released a few months later. This requires me to un-install and then perform a new installation. What I noticed in the 64-bit version was that some portions of the new Ribbon interface still remained in English. Our helpful localization team then assisted me in identifying the cause; the current state of ribbons and other UI components is preserved in some newly added settings files. Since these files also contain the captions for the elements, these will remain in the previous language. By following the procedure below, these settings files will be re-created, now with all captions in the correct language.

Deleting the docking and ribbon state files

MapInfo Pro maintains a file called MapInfoPro.DockingState.xml to hold settings on the position of various windows within the software. Similarly a file called MapInfoPro.RibbonState.xml holds settings on the state of the ribbon.

Here are the instructions to delete these files:

  1. Close/exit MapInfo Pro.
  2. Open Windows Explorer and make sure that system/hidden folders and files are displayed.
  3. Navigate to the following folder:
(Note that the exact location may vary based on your organizations IT strategy. You can choose to install MapInfo Pro differently to the above.)
  4. Delete the following two files:
  5. Start MapInfo Pro again
To review, we deleted these files so as to force MapInfo Pro to recreate them. This was necessary because they were a holdover from an English install of MapInfo Pro. When the localised version was installed, a few bits of English text remained in the interface from these files.
