Displaying Labels at Specific Zoom Levels

Use the Labeling Rules tab to turn labels on/off at different zoom levels.

Introduction

The Labeling Rules tab provides control on visibility of Labels only at user prescribed zoom levels. A user may opt for an automatic label off at certain zoom levels where labeling may not be relevant.

Scenario

For example, if a particular zoom extent on a map displays 1 million points of interest, labeling each point would not make much sense (image below depicting a similar scenario) but if the same data is zoomed to an extent where every point of interest can be viewed distinctly, labeling has a better context when switched on.

Let's look at a US County with Labels ON at a higher zoom extent

The ‘within zoom range’ option (lower right hand side of the dialog box shown below) in the Labeling Rules tab enables the user to prescribe a min and max zoom in distance units, that will automatically turn Labels on/off based on the zoom level a map object is being viewed.

This helps the user to automate the labeling on/off setting at relevant zoom levels. It also helps in quicker rendering of maps with dense data especially at broader zoom levels.
