Rummaging in the Toolbox: Introducing the Legend Manager

The map in the Easy Tip article this month included a Legend window embedded within it. This was done using a tool called The Legend Manager. You will find the Legend Manager in the Tool Manager (click on the Tools menu).

This option can be useful if you wish to directly capture a map window for output.

It is very simple to use. Once tool is loaded, you will find the Thematic Legend Manager sub menu in the Tools menu. The command you need to use is Embed Thematic Legend.

The map also includes the Microsoft Bing® Roads Layer, see the copyright within the map.

Once the Legend has been embedded you can move it around to any position you like, within the map window.

Removing an Embedded Legend If a map has an embedded legend and you wish to remove it, the process is the same. The menu command automatically changes to Remove Embedded Legend.

Additional comments

Embedded Legends do come across if a map is copied and pasted into other applications (using Edit > Copy Map Window or the Drag Map Window button.

The Legend Manager only works with thematic legends. It is not possible to embed the Legends built with the Legend Designer (or the older Cartographic Legends) window. An option for combined output of maps and legends built with the Legend Designer window is to use a Layout Window. The Thematic Legend Manager menu includes a command that will allow you to view the legend for a map window. This is the same as the Show Theme Legend Window in the Options menu. It is provided as a convenience.
