Resolving: TAB files created in the x64 version of MapInfo Pro do not open in QGIS

Products affected: MapInfo Professional 64-bit

TAB files that are created in the x64 version of MapInfo Pro do not open in QGIS.
TAB files can either be created using the Universal Translator, File Open, Import function, etc.

As QGIS are is a 3rd party software, the MapInfo Pro engineering team do not believe QGIS licenses MFAL like FME (Universal Translator in MIPRO) does. Engineering believe that QGIS makes use of MITAB.

MITAB is very old and does not support NativeX, different block sizes, newer ellipsoids, etc. It is a third-party hack that appear to not have an owner, and there is no one to do any updates to the code.

UPDATED: December 3, 2019
MapInfo Pro can set map block sizes for creating new TAB files by altering the preference.xml file or via MapBasic.

Please perform the following:
  1. Ensure MapInfo Pro is closed.
  2. Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MapInfo\MapInfo
  3. Open the preferences.xml file in Notepad or Notepad++ (better option)
  4. Do a search for BlockSize
  5. Please change both (example: <DefaultBlockSizeNative> 16384 <DefaultBlockSizeNativeX> so that it mirrors the below:)
