How to clip data to a selected polygon or region boundary using MapInfo Discover

Product affected: MapInfo Discover™
MapInfo Discover provides a number of tools that allow clipping of dataset to selected areas. The tools are data type specific, i.e. vector, image or grid data (MapInfo Discover 32-bit only):

  • Vector (i.e. point, polygon or polyline data, such as soil sample or drillhole point locations, surface geology regions, traverse lines and track polyline data)
Use Discover > Object Editing > Clip to Polygon (32bit) or QUERY > Vector Clip (64-bit).
This tool requires the user to select one or more bounding regions or polygons (e.g. the sub-blocks to be relinquished) before running the tool.
  • Imagery (e.g. aerial photoes, landsat imagery)
Use the IMAGES > Images Tools > Clip Image tool. This provides 2 methods for defining the clip region/area: 1. Select one or more bounding regions/polygons (e.g. the sub-blocks to be relinquished) before running the tool.

From the Images menu (Discover>Images menu) select Clip Image. This provides 2 methods for defining the clip region or area:

1. Select one or more bounding regions or polygons (e.g. the sub-blocks to be relinquished) before running the tool. Within the tool, enable the 'Clip outside polygon' option, and ensure that the Polygon Table *Selection*' is enabled (below).

 2. Within the tool, Select a table containing the polygonal areas to clip the image to and select Clip Outside Polygon. All polygons in the specified table will be utilised.

  • Raster grids/surfaces  (e.g. DEM or topographic, geophysical (IP, magnetics) or geochemical (copper in soil sampling) grids) :

In MapInfo Discover 32-bit only: Ensure that a table with the delimiting regions is opened in the Map Window with the target grid surface.

From the Surfaces menu (Discover>Surfaces menu), select Grid Utilities > Clip. Choose either the *Selection* option (if one or more polygons are selected) or the table containing the polygons (example below):

Within the dialog, ensure that Clip grid to region and Polygonal are selected. The preview of the output will be displayed. Press Save As to create the clipped grid.

In 64-Bit, Ensure that a table with the delimiting regions (i.e. the ‘cookie-cutter’ layer) is open in the mapper with the target raster grid.

1. From the RASTER tab, select Raster Operations >Clip.
2. Under Clip Options:

  1. Set the Action as Retain Inside

  2. Set the Clip Region as Region(Polygon)

  3. Set the Polygon to the table containing the regions you wish to clip against (in this case, ‘EL775’)

  4. Press Process
